Cows and Dogs

Sophie and I did our rainy day walk today which means we didn’t hit the trails and instead she stayed on leash. I try to keep her to paved roads to cut down on her collection of mud. We have a nice 2 mile walk that passes several farms on the outskirts of town.

It hadn’t occurred to me that wearing her red raincoat might impact her reception by her cow friends. Usually the cows are pretty indifferent to Sophie although sometimes they will meander towards the fence to say hello and sniff at her. This usually continues until one of the parties gets startled and they separate.

Today was different. Sophie drew a crowd. I’m not sure if it is instinctual that bulls are attracted to red or if they are trained to be that way. What I do know is that the male cows were extremely interested in Sophie in her rain kit. Cows that were all the way across the field came running to the fence line to see Sophie.

They didn’t act aggressive but they were a tad overly friendly. It was really a bit odd. Sophie, of course, felt like she was finally getting the attention she wholly deserved. I’m not going to tell her about my ideas about the red raincoat. Best to let her think she drew them to her with her winning personality.
