First Green Then Yellow

The colors in my part of France are so different than the colors of Maine. Maine in March is brown and white. Unfortunately it is usually more brown than white . April gives way to yellowish green and then in May everything starts to change all at once.

Here in France, the color green never left the fields. The grass never turned brown and some crops continued to grow through the winter. There are more evergreen plants like holly and ivy that grow so the hedgerows remained mostly jade. As I’ve mentioned, Spring really begins in the Winter here. As early as February, the buds on bulbs started to blossom. The green intensified and eventually yellow joined in.

First, there were the yellow blossoms on the daffodils that bloomed in a patch adjacent to my front door. Then there were the Lesser Celandine that peeked out along the paths where Sophie and I walked. By March, these were joined by narcissus of every type blooming everywhere and wild primula covering the hillsides. Gorse, and forsythia rounded out the yellow phase.

What is to come next? I have my money on blues. I see blue bells just about to bloom in my garden. The violets are beginning to show their faces. Grape hyacinths and forget me knots are not too far ahead. I anxiously await the ever evolving rainbow!
