Pizzouli And That Pizza

I arrived to Naples in bright sunshine. I had a very positive Easy Jet experience and thought the plane was clean and the service lovely. I walked off the plane and everything about Italy felt different.

The light was brighter, the sun warmer and there were massive hulking mountains in the distance. Going through customs was easy and fast. I was met outside the arrival gate by Mary and her son Nick. I had worked with Mary in my Coffin School days back in Brunswick. I’ve called her a saint a few times on this trip and she might very well be. I knew her in Brunswick as a cheerful, friendly colleague. She was quick with a smile and an encouraging word. Now in Italy she has quickly become my friend as well as super host, guide, and recommender of all things pizza.

Mary and Joe live in Pizzouli which is a town outside of Naples. Their apartment could not have had a more beautiful terrace view. I was introduced to some other guests of Mary and Joe’s and we all sat drinking a variety of spritz cocktails made by Nick. I had a Hugo spritz which is made with elderflower liquor and mint. It was like summer in a glass.

We finished our first day with my dream pizza. Napoli style means thin, soft, pillowy dough with bubbles. I had an eggplant, mozarella and tomato pie that met all of my expectations. I didn’t finish it but I came damn close. I dig the Italian single serving pizza as it is massive and and you are considered a.bit odd if you ask to share it.
